Emotional well-being, metabolic factors and health status (EMHS) Study
Type 2 diabetes results from a complex combination of biological, behavioural, and psychological factors. This project examined how depression and metabolic factors such as abdominal obesity, high blood pressure, cholesterol abnormalities, inflammation, and impaired blood sugar regulation interact to influence the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Using CARTaGENE data and follow-up assessments conducted several years after the initial recruitment, the research team found that individuals with both depressive symptoms and multiple metabolic risk factors were at particularly high risk of developing diabetes. The findings also highlighted the important role of lifestyle factors, including physical activity, smoking, and diet, in these relationships. This research contributes to a better understanding of the links between mental and physical health and suggests that diabetes prevention strategies may benefit from addressing both psychological well-being and metabolic health.
