Genetic basis and modifiers of sleep disorders
Sleep disorders are common and partly influenced by genetic factors that are still not well understood. This project aimed to identify genetic variants associated with insomnia and sleep duration.
The research team used genetic data and questionnaire responses from CARTaGENE participants.
Two complementary approaches were conducted: a case-control study comparing individuals diagnosed with insomnia to CARTaGENE participants, focusing on genes involved in serotonin, GABA, and adenosine pathways, and a genome-wide association study (GWAS) examining habitual sleep duration.
The results are encouraging, particularly for certain genes involved in sleep regulation. Additional analyses helped confirm and further explore these findings.
This work contributes to a better understanding of the biological basis of sleep and may help guide future prevention and treatment approaches for sleep disorders.
