Summary

The BALSAC population database (UQAC) is one of the richest genealogical research infrastructures in the world, containing more than five million records. It offers a unique opportunity to explore the history and population structure of Quebec in great detail. By linking these historical records with the genetic and clinical data from CARTaGENE, this project aims to better understand how population movements and family relationships shape the distribution of genetic variants.
The first objective is to use these genealogies to test theories in population genetics, including differences between genealogical and genetic ancestors. The second objective is to simulate various geographic sampling strategies to determine how to best identify rare variants associated with diseases.
Finally, the project will examine how non‑genetic factors (such as environmental or behavioral characteristics) interact with genealogical or genetic ancestry to improve the interpretation of genetic studies. Although centered on Quebec, this work has the potential to inspire improved genetic research methods worldwide.
