Analysis of genealogical characteristics of CARTaGENE participants

Summary

This project aimed to generate a demographic and genetic portrait of participants from the first CARTaGENE recruitment phase by reconstructing nearly 5,400 genealogies, most of which trace back to the 17th century. These genealogies made it possible to compare participants from the four studied regions (Montréal, Québec, Sherbrooke and Saguenay) and to analyze several parameters, including kinship links and the geographic origins of founding ancestors. A unique aspect of the project was the linkage of genealogical information with other survey data, such as the places of birth and residence of participants, their parents and grandparents. The results provide a detailed picture of the origins and migratory trajectories of individuals in each region, contributing to a better understanding of the recent evolution of the genetic makeup of the Quebec population. The genealogical data produced through this project may also support future research making use of CARTaGENE resources.
