Summary

This project aimed to better understand the genetic contribution to common psychiatric disorders, including bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and attention‑deficit/hyperactivity disorder. These conditions are highly heritable and have a substantial polygenic component, yet a large portion of their heritability remains unexplained. Using the CARTaGENE cohort, which is composed mainly of Quebec and French‑Canadian participants, the researchers examined the burden of common genetic variants associated with these disorders and their relationships with various phenotypes collected within the cohort. The project also made it possible to study rare genetic variation through sequencing and genotyping in individuals with bipolar disorder and in controls. The harmonized genotyping data and the richness of CARTaGENE’s phenotypic information enabled a detailed characterization of the psychiatric genetic determinants.
