Depression, metabolic factors and the risk of cancer: prospective associations in the CARTaGENE study

Depression and metabolic risk factors, such as abdominal obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol abnormalities, have each been linked to an increased risk of certain cancers. Using CARTaGENE data and linked Quebec health administrative databases, this project examined how these factors may act together to influence cancer risk. The findings showed that the combination of depressive symptoms and metabolic risk factors was associated with a higher risk of developing cancer than either factor alone. The research also highlighted the importance of lifestyle behaviours and mental health in cancer prevention. These studies contribute to a better understanding of the links between mental health, metabolic health, and cancer risk and may help identify individuals who are at greater risk of developing cancer.
