Genetics of REM sleep behavior disorder and conversion to Parkinson’s disease

REM sleep behavior disorder is characterized by the loss of muscle paralysis during sleep, leading individuals to act out their dreams, and is considered an early marker of neurodegenerative diseases. This project aimed to identify genetic factors associated with the disorder and its progression to Parkinson’s disease and related conditions. Using genome-wide analyses including data from CARTaGENE participants, the study identified genetic variants associated with disease risk and progression. The results show that the genetic profile of the disorder is partly distinct and may influence both the type and speed of progression, improving understanding of early disease mechanisms.
