Summary

Cardiometabolic diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, are partly influenced by genetic factors. This project aims to identify new genes and genetic variants that could serve as potential drug targets for safer and more effective treatments.
The research team uses publicly available genetic data to identify variants linked to therapeutic targets and develops genetic risk scores based on these variants.
These scores are then tested against a wide range of health-related characteristics in CARTaGENE participants using phenome-wide association studies (pheWAS).
The project has already contributed to studies showing that polygenic risk scores can identify individuals at higher risk of myocardial infarction and improve the prediction of cardiovascular disease.
These findings highlight the important role of genetics in cardiometabolic diseases and support the development of more precise risk stratification tools and personalized prevention strategies.
