Genomic follow-up of the susceptibility loci for schizophrenia and bipolar disorder in multi-affected families of Eastern Quebec

Schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are complex psychiatric conditions for which genetic factors play an important role. This project draws on a unique resource of large multi-generational families from Eastern Quebec that have been followed for several decades to better understand the genetic mechanisms underlying these disorders. By combining DNA sequencing, gene expression studies, and polygenic risk score analyses, the research team aims to identify genetic variants that contribute to disease susceptibility.

Research conducted to date has shown that polygenic risk scores can distinguish individuals affected by schizophrenia or bipolar disorder from their unaffected relatives, while also highlighting genetic factors shared between the two conditions. The team has also developed new analytical methods that improve the study of genetic data from extended families and help better characterize the role of rare genetic variants in psychiatric disorders. Together, these studies contribute to a better understanding of the genetic architecture of psychotic disorders and may ultimately support the development of more personalized diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.
